It was Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Mi devil fruit. The first time we saw a devil fruit was in the fourth anime episode (the first manga chapter) of One Piece. Image Courtesy: One Piece by Toei Animation Studios (Crunchyroll) This was previously stated by One Piece manga creator Eiichiro Oda when he was asked how he came up with the concept of the devil fruits in an interview. For instance, someone wished for something like – “If only I could stretch or lengthen my hands or body,” which resulted in Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Mi devil fruit. Sometimes people say, “ If only I could do that or this,” and well, in the One Piece world, such wishes come true in the form of devil fruits. Vegapunk, devil fruits are the manifestation of the dreams/ desires/ wishes/ hopes of people for the evolution of mankind. ![]() ![]() Although he claims it to be his own theory, it appears to be the most plausible explanation we have seen in years for the unknown origin of devil fruits. Vegapunk recently shared a brief explanation of the history of the devil fruits. The precise history of the devil fruit’s origin hasn’t been revealed in the manga or anime just yet. No one can eat two devil fruits at once or separately, as they will blow the person up from the inside, resulting in the user’s death (except Blackbeard whose mystery is yet to be explained). In this manner, the devil fruit cycle will continue throughout the times to come. If a devil fruit user dies, their devil fruit will reappear somewhere in the world and can be consumed by another user.Consuming the devil fruit will make the user unable to swim in still waters (like the sea, river, etc) but they won’t be affected by rain or moving waters unless half of their body is immersed. ![]()
